This “Invert, always invert” mug is inspired by one of Charlie Munger’s favourite problem-solving rules. It’s a white ceramic coffee mug, and a clever daily reminder for investors, engineers and anyone who likes to think differently.
What does “invert, always invert” mean?
Munger borrowed the phrase from the 19th-century mathematician Carl Jacobi. Many hard problems can’t be solved by thinking forwards, so turn them around. Instead of asking “How do I succeed?”, ask “What would guarantee failure?”, and then avoid those things. As Munger put it, avoiding stupidity is easier than seeking brilliance.
