1. For the Buffett & Berkshire devotee
He reads the annual letter the day it comes out and has opinions on See’s Candies’ pricing power.
A trip to the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting ($$$)
Why it works: for a Buffett fan, going to Omaha is the pilgrimage. The weekend includes a long Q&A session with Berkshire’s leadership, an exhibit hall of Berkshire-owned businesses (Brooks and Dairy Queen were among the 2026 exhibitors) and shareholder shopping events.
What to know before booking:
- The 2027 meeting is expected sometime in May 2027. [Usually confirmed by Berkshire Hathaway 2-3 months ahead of the meeting. . Check berkshirehathaway.com before booking anything non-refundable.]
- You need to be a shareholder to attend. In 2026, shareholders collected credentials in Omaha by showing proof of ownership and photo ID. Owning a single Class B share (BRK.B) has historically been enough. Check the current rules on the number of guest passes.
- Omaha hotels fill up months ahead. Book early, or look at hotels a short drive out of town.
Best for: a milestone birthday or retirement. Going with him is the real gift.
Or: host a meeting-day watch party at home ($)
Not everyone can fly to Nebraska. The Q&A is livestreamed (in 2026 it was on CNBC), so you can recreate the day at home: stream the meeting, serve See’s Candies and Cherry Coke, and let Dad give his own running commentary. It’s cheap, it’s a shared experience, and it happens every May.

Charlie Munger’s collected talks, reissued in 2023 by Stripe Press as a handsome hardcover. Many Munger fans have read the speeches online but don’t own a copy worth keeping. This is the one to own. The Snowball by Alice Schroeder ($)
The biography of Warren Buffett, written with his cooperation and published in 2008. It covers the man as much as the investor: his childhood businesses, his marriage, his friendships. Best for the dad who knows the investing philosophy and wants the life story. Skip if he prefers short books; it’s long.
Where Are the Customers’ Yachts? by Fred Schwed Jr. ($)
A short, very funny book about Wall Street, first published in 1940 and still accurate. Best for the cynical dad who enjoys pointing out that brokers get rich on fees. It’s a quick read.
The Most Important Thing by Howard Marks ($)
Marks’s ideas on risk, cycles and “second-level thinking”, distilled from his client memos. Best for the dad who reads Buffett’s letters and is ready for another great investment writer.
A Kindle loaded with every Berkshire letter ($$)
Berkshire publishes its annual shareholder letters free on its website, going back to 1977. Put them on an e-reader for him: decades of Buffett’s thinking, and the only cost is the device.
4. For the hands-on stock picker
A year of a research tool ($$)
If he builds his own spreadsheets and reads company filings, a paid plan on a charting and financial-data platform such as Koyfin is a gift he’ll use every week. Koyfin has a free tier, so he can try it first. Ask him which tool he’d use before you buy.
Noise-cancelling headphones ($$–$$$)

5. For the dad who needs time away from the screens
Bridge lessons for two, or a bridge set ($–$$)
Buffett has said he plays bridge around eight hours a week. It’s a game of probability, reading your partner and making decisions with incomplete information, which is very like investing. Look for beginner classes at a local bridge club, or start with free online bridge. Best for couples or dad-and-adult-kid pairs.
Acquire, the classic stock-market board game ($$)
Sid Sackson’s 1960s game, now published by Avalon Hill. Players found hotel chains, buy shares and cash in when companies merge. It rewards the same instincts as investing: when to concentrate, when to diversify, when to sell. Best for a family or friends’ game night with 2–6 players.
New running shoes from a Berkshire company ($$)
Brooks is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. It’s a practical gift for a dad who spends too long in front of spreadsheets, with a built-in joke about doing due diligence on a portfolio company.
6. For the dad raising the next generation of investors
The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel ($)
Twenty short chapters on how people *behave* with money, with stories rather than formulas. Why it works: Dad reads it first, then hands it to his teenager. It’s one of the few investing books that works for both.
A family game night with Acquire ($$)
See above. Few things teach kids about dilution and mergers faster than losing a hotel chain to their sister.
Money-lesson flashcards for younger kids ($)

The free gift: write him a “Chairman’s letter”
Every year Buffett writes a letter to Berkshire’s shareholders. Turn it around and write Dad an annual letter in the same style from “his shareholders”:
- Performance review: the family’s year (new jobs, school results, trips).
- Mistakes we made: Buffett always owns his errors. Include one or two funny ones.
- Our best investment: something Dad did this year that paid off for the family.
- Outlook: what you’re looking forward to next year.
Print it, sign it “Your loyal shareholders” and put it in his card. It costs nothing, and he’ll probably keep it longer than anything else. (It also fits neatly inside either gift set.)
What to skip
- Trading gadgets and “get rich” courses. Most investor dads find these annoying, not thoughtful.
- Stock tips or a “hot” share as a gift. If you give shares, choose a company with meaning to him (see the framed-share idea in our main guide), not a punt.
- Another copy of a book he already owns. Check his shelf, or ask Mum.
